Urology fellowship in Canada: an international applicant's checklist

Compare Canadian host requirements without confusing fellowship selection with provincial registration or work permission.

Choose the Canadian training format

Use the Canada directory to identify the subspecialty and appointment you need. Distinguish a clinical fellowship from a research post or observation visit. Write down the hospital, university, named programme and intended intake. Two opportunities in the same city can have different admissions and clinical-access conditions.

Use Toronto and McGill as separate routes

Toronto's urology FAQ explains that its clinical fellowship appointments depend on appropriate Ontario licensing and indemnity. McGill's PGME portal provides its own programme catalogue, admissions categories and timelines. These are examples of different institutional pathways; neither should be treated as a single national checklist. Check current instructions with the relevant postgraduate office, especially where older departmental pages describe historical examinations.

Check the appointment dependencies

Ask the host what specialist evidence, language documentation, registration assessment and work authorization are required for your background. Record which office handles each step and which conditions must be met before the start. Ask whether an offer is conditional and what happens if an approval is delayed. Do not infer eligibility from a programme accepting one previous international fellow.

Prepare a focused application

Follow the host's current document list and deadline, then tailor your statement to the clinical or research objective. Ask about fees, salary or external sponsorship and the expected duration. Compare clinical duties and supervision alongside the practical cost of relocation. Use the application planner to track confirmations, while keeping sensitive documents in your own secure storage.

Your action checklist

  • Identify the province and responsible PGME office
  • Check the exact applicant category
  • Confirm registration and work-permission dependencies
  • Follow the host's current packet and timeline
