Robotic urology fellowship: how to compare console training
Distinguish simulation, observation, assisting and supervised console progression in robotic training posts.
Identify the clinical scope
Clarify whether the post focuses on prostate, kidney, bladder, reconstructive or mixed practice. Ask how robotics fits alongside open surgery, laparoscopy, clinics, multidisciplinary meetings and follow-up. A narrow procedural objective may suit one post, while another applicant needs broader decision-making exposure.
Separate simulation from patient care
Ask about simulator access, bedside assistance, supervised procedural steps and console participation as distinct activities. Find out which are available to your appointment category. Observation or access to training equipment is not evidence that you will be permitted to operate on patients. Confirm registration and credentialing conditions before comparing promised clinical exposure.
Understand progression and case allocation
Ask who supervises console work, how readiness is assessed and what happens when a difficult case needs to be taken over. Discuss allocation between fellows and other trainees and how leave, research and service commitments affect training. Request a typical schedule and assessment framework rather than relying on the centre's overall case volume.
Connect the training to your next role
Define what you need to bring back to your home service: technical steps, patient selection, pathway design, outcomes research or team training. Ask what evidence of progress is provided at completion. The Endourological Society's fellowship information includes robotic training within its wider fellowship scope; individual hosts still determine the actual structure and application requirements.
Your action checklist
- Identify procedure mix and clinical objectives
- Separate simulation and clinical console access
- Confirm supervision and assessment
- Check registration, appointment and research expectations
